- The procession of Our Father Jesus of Health, Madrid
The statue of Our Father Jesus of Health was slowly squeezed out of the door of the Parish Church of Saint Jerome, Royal, to begin the first procession for Easter week in Madrid. The Royal church is located behind the Prado Museum at the top of the small hill crest.
Leaving and entering the church with the statue is one of the most difficult and tense moments for the Fraternity of Our Father Jesus of Health and the Blessed Mary of Anguish (The Gypsies) who are responsible for carrying the statue. It takes 35 men to carry the statue on the thick pedestal made of engraved wood.
(I followed the procession until it reached the Prado Museum which took about one and a half hours to reach from the main gates of the church, a distance of about half a kilometre.)

- I created the Twitter sidebar widget for Wordpress because I wanted something more customisable than the badges issued by Twitter. If you know your way around CSS you can style it yourself, otherwise it will keep the default styling of lists in your sidebar. It requires either Wordpress 2.2 or for earlier Wordpress versions you can install the Widgets plugin from Automattic. If you want to, skip installation instructions and go to the download section. There’s also a list of known flaws and planned improvements on the next page.

Flickr isn't limited to still images, by the way; it has supported video for a few months.

Flickr doesn't restrict the resolution of images you upload except by file size: 20MB per photo at most (or 10MB max with a free account). Videos are a different story, having more restrictions: Only Pro users can upload videos at all, and even they are limited to 150MB and 90 seconds per video. Obviously Flickr's in no danger of overtaking YouTube, Vimeo, or even Facebook as the primo video-sharing site. The feature exists as an extra for photo sharers who want to show off the occasional home movie.

Facebook's photo storage rewrite
- This week Facebook will complete its roll-out of a new photo storage system designed to reduce the social network's reliance on expensive proprietary solutions from NetApp and Akamai. The new large blob storage system, named Haystack, is a custom-built file system solution for the over 850 million photos uploaded to the site each month (500 GB per day!). Jason Sobel, a former NetApp engineer, led Facebook's effort to design a more cost-effective and high-performance storage system for their unique needs. Robert Johnson, Facebook's Director of Engineering, mentioned the new storage system rollout in a Computerworld interview last week. Most of what we know about Haystack comes from a Stanford ACM presentation by Jason Sobel in June 2008. Haystack will allow Facebook to operate its massive photo archive from commodity hardware while reducing its dependence on CDNs in the United States.
